Your itinerary in the Itria Valley with a visit to the vineyard among the trulli, a few kilometres from Alberobello and Martina Franca, on the Spalluto family property at Trulli Il Castagno.
One of the most interesting activities that can be done in Puglia, in the Locorotondo or Martina Franca areas in particular, is the experience of pruning in the vineyard with a snack, a seasonal activity that takes place during the autumn and winter, starting in October and ending in late March.
The typical experience begins at the Trulli il Castagno property, where visitors and guests gather and then walk to one of father Pietro Spalluto’s vineyards, the heart of the activity.
Here, the family expert explains the different techniques for pruning vines and details the factors that influence their development and growth.
Once the theoretical part is over, we move on to practice with an actual pruning demonstration. Historical tools, such as the billhook, and modern battery-powered tools, such as electric pruning shears, are used. The use of the billhook is compared with classic gardening shears, which have supplanted this tool in recent decades.
The demonstration of pruning in the vineyard with a snack lasts approximately 90 minutes.
During the pruning experience in the vineyard, with a group of 2 to 20 people maximum, there is a lit brazier with pruning waste, which warms up and creates a cosy atmosphere.
After the practical demonstration, visitors are invited to enjoy the farmer’s snack, which represents the custom of working in the countryside: a frugal, quick meal made of sandwiches stuffed with typical local ingredients, such as capocollo di Martina Franca, caciocavallo, mozzarella, burrata and sun-dried tomatoes, accompanied by seasonal vegetables, such as turnip greens and Swiss chard.
The meal is eaten around the brazier fire, accompanied by a glass of home-produced wine from Vigna Il Castagno.
The farmer’s snack, after pruning in the vineyard, is a unique opportunity to socialise among people and to share stories and traditions. Even on colder days, the atmosphere created around the fire welcomes and invites you to spend a few hours in nature.
To ensure greater comfort for visitors, it is possible to request a transfer service from the nearest stations or from the accommodation facility where you are staying, to reach the Trulli il Castagno countryside in comfort.
The experience of pruning and snacking in the vineyard is an experience to be enjoyed and perhaps combined with a typical activity that our Antoniana proposes together with chefs Beatrice and Alessandro: dinner in the vineyard. Another interesting and unique gastronomic event to discover the traditions and culture in the Itria Valley.
